Dayana Mendoza crowned Miss Universe 2008
2008-07-15 15:57:42 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)Portland, Maine (CaymanMama.com) — Dayana Mendoza, the former Miss Venezuela, was crowned with the prestigious title of Miss Universe 2008 in the resort city of Vietnam, Nha Trang on July 14th. Dayana, a 22-year old brunette, was given the crown made of the yellow and white gold bejeweled with dazzling precious stones. The winner of last year’s contest, Riyo Mori from Japan, presented the crown to the 2008 winner as a billion viewers stuck to their television to know the final results of the pageant.
After winning the crown, Mendoza said that she was very excited and cried heartily. Mendoza is the 57th finalist of the Miss Universe title. The winner also mentioned that the kidnapping she faced some time ago in Venezuela has made her calm even in stressful conditions. The model also reported that the kind of kidnapping that she suffered from is a common thing in her country and that she always wanted to raise her voice against this violence.
Mendoza, an aspiring interior designer, was one among the other four finalists from Latin America including Taliana Vargas, 20, the first runner-up from Colombia. The other remaining top five contestants were from Mexico, Russia and the Dominican Republic.
The Miss Universe Pageant 2008 went off smoothly as compared to that of the 2007 pageant that was marked by various protests and banning of a dress along with the withdrawal of Miss Sweden due to character discrepancies. After her win, Mendoza will spend time traveling to speak about humanitarian issues.
