Exercise helps brain activity of Alzheimer’s disease
2008-07-15 16:35:04 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Orlando, Florida (CaymanMama.com) — According to a recent study, cardio-respiratory fitness has been linked to less contraction of brain activity in the people who suffer from early Alzheimer’s disease. Researcher, Jeffery M. Burns, MD said that the patients of Alzheimer’s were compared to the people who were not suffering from the disease.
Approximately 121 people belonging to the age group of 60 and older were tested. The 57 people who were tested had early stages of Alzheimer’s while the remaining 64 had absolutely no dementia. Burns indicated that those inflicted with early Alzheimer’s disease combined with a low level of physical fitness had “four times more brain shrinkage” than those who were considered normal and physically fit.
All of the test subjects were put on a treadmill for testing. The goal of the test was to observe peak oxygen consumption (VO2). VO2 is one of the standards that are used to calculate cardio- respiratory fitness. The researchers used VO2 levels to assess the physical activity level of all the participants. In fact, the participants were given MRIs (Magnetic Reasoning Imaging) and mental assessments to examine the white and gray matter in the brain.
Burns indicated that the results could possibly show that exercise is crucial to clear thinking. According to the research results, a decreased brain volume has a direct link to weakened cognitive performance so reversing the effects by exercise is a critical element to positive performance.
The researchers say that their study is potent enough to insinuate the relationship between physical fitness and Alzheimer’s disease.
