Food co-op movement in East New York achieves success
2008-07-15 17:09:44 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Rochester, New York (CaymanMama.com) — In a recent trend which seems to have overtaken the vegetable market of New York, a large number of farmers have started selling their produce in the vegetable markets. Farmers are able to sell their farm-fresh produce in the markets under a local food co-op movement, which invites farmers to sell their products in the local markets and grocery stores of New York state.
Both the farmers and the consumers seem to be extremely happy with this movement. Diana Smith, an elderly woman who lives in the neighborhood of Farragut Houses, reported that the food products made available to them under this cooperative food movement are of the best quality and are available at extremely low prices.
Jennifer Datka, who works for the Community Supported Agriculture Program, reported that the main reasons which triggered this cooperation movement was the fact that the neighborhood area of Myrtle Ave had only one supermarket left in the area after a large number of food marts and supermarkets were shut down recently. Datka also added that the only supermarket that was known to produce low quality goods was made available to consumers in limited quantity.
Some of the most common farm-fresh produce made available to consumers under this movement include cucumbers, lettuce, radishes and beets along with other vegetables and fruits. Individuals who were tired of paying exorbitant prices for stale fruits and vegetables welcomed this move tremendously. In fact, locals from other neighboring areas who were facing a similar food crisis also flock to this cooperative market in order to get their weekly dose of fresh fruits and vegetables.
