Phoenix, Arizona (CaymanMama.com) — In a blog post on Monday, Google said that YouTube will receive permission to mask important user information from the records that it must hand over to Viacom.

Google stated, “Viacom and the other litigants have backed off their demand for YouTube user viewing histories.” It further added, “We have reached an agreement to anonymise the data.” A spokesman from Viacom declined to comment. This move came after the federal court ordered YouTube to turn over the IP addresses, user names, and viewing history to Viacom earlier this month. This ignited controversy over internet privacy and has put Viacom on the defensive.

Last year, Viacom accused YouTube of violating the copyright in a $1 billion lawsuit. Following the court order, Viacom was widely criticized of over-intruding in people’s online privacy even though YouTube said that it had never asked for personal identification information.

To this particular point, the agreement seems to have made almost everyone into a winner and Viacom will appear to be a responsible citizen of the internet. Undoubtedly, Google will be credited for raising the voice for internet rights and YouTube users will not have to fret in concern of their privacy.

Last weekend, Google refused to turn over the videos that have been watched and uploaded by YouTube employees to Viacom. According to sources, this information may help Viacom prove that YouTube has become negligent about their site’s piracy. In fact, Google is likely to question Viacom in relation to similar employee records. This might be helpful in proving that Viacom lawyers have asked YouTube for the removal of its videos. It is believed that this case will not be resolved until early next year.
