2008-07-18 15:19:58 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Business News)Seattle, Washington (CaymanMama.com) — Starbucks Corp. announced on Thursday the locations of 600 stores that the company plans to shut down by the beginning of next year. The stores will be closed in 44 states along with the District of Columbia and the location that will face the largest shut down is in California where around 88 stores are slated to be closed. In Florida, 59 shops will be shut down and Texas will be facing a closure of 57. All the workers of the Starbucks Corp. have been informed which stores will be closed from the total of 11,000 US locations.
The company’s list can be easily read like a US cross section, with the shut downs planned in college towns, shopping malls, highway locations and beach resorts. Las Vegas will be losing many stores and the expected number is around 13 which is further followed by San Diego losing ten, Baton Rogue and Dallas with nine each and Houston with eight stores. Aside from the mentioned locations facing shut down, Seattle, the hometown of Starbucks, will be forced to see the closing of seven cafes.
The list includes financially struggling locations such as Michigan and Flint and even affluent suburbs such as Walnut Creek and Newton. In the previous week, the company did not have any plans to declare the shut downs, but as the customers and employees criticized the company, the details were given out.
A spokeswoman from Starbucks reported that the organization has made the decision to announce the list only for the “spirit of transparency.” The company has also promised workers that they will be given suitable jobs.
