Healthy diets shown to possess benefits in spite of modest weight loss

Boston, Massachusetts (CaymanMama.com) — A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday was expected to determine which 3 types of diet are best. But the results shows the troubles in losing weight and how diets do not perform well.

Research was conducted on 322 dieters, out of which 277 were men and 45 women. These dieters were asked to follow any one of the 3 diet types being a diet with 30% fat  based on the American Heart Association’s guidelines, a low carbohydrate diet as per the Atkins diet plans and the Mediterranean diet. This study was financed partly by Atkins Research Foundation and the trials were conducted at Nuclear Research Center in Dimona, Israel which is one of the isolated workplaces with its own medical-department.

The plan was inclusive of regular calls and meetings with dietitians along with counseling for the spouses. As the center is located in an isolated place, the dieters ate their lunch consistently in the building where the food was actually colored to aid the dieters in complying with their eating plans.

The best weight loss occurred in the initial 5 months with the Mediterranean diet and low fat diet where subjects lost around ten pounds and with the low carbohydrate diet, dieters lost 14 pounds. By the end of 2 years, all dieters had regained their weight to a certain extent, though not all. Most dieters showed a net weight loss of 10 pounds and low fat dieters about 6 pounds respectively. As per the researchers, the result were modest and the small weight-loss that the dieters had helped in improving their cholesterol and  other health markers.

Men performed better on the low carbohydrate diets and lost 11 pounds in comparison to 9 pounds on Mediterranean diet. But the women did better on the Mediterranean diet where they lost 14 pounds in comparison to the 5 pounds on low carbohydrate plan.
