NYC regulates calorie postings on all chain restaurant menus
2008-07-21 18:19:07 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Reno, Nevada (CaymanMama.com) — On Friday, a new ruling became effective mandating that New York chain restaurants were to post calorie counts directly on the menu, making it the first of its kind for the city.
As part of an anti-obesity campaign, this rule requires restaurants which have more than 15 nationwide outlets to post the calorie information along with the price of the individual dishes they offer. This rule affects almost 2,000 restaurants which accounts for approximately 10% of total restaurants in NYC. New York City health inspectors can now issue citations and fine the restaurants who do not act in accordance with the calorie-posting rule. The fine range from $200 to $2,000.
The rule will affect restaurants like Burger King, McDonald’s, Applebee’s, Starbucks, Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts. City officials say that the rule could prevent about 150,000 New York residents from becoming obese and could prevent at least 30,000 from developing diabetes over the next 5 years.
Analysts said that they do not expect that the rule will have a good impact on the eating habits of consumers and some residents seemed unfazed by this rule.
This ruling was originally planned to be implemented by April but was delayed due to the fight put up by New York state against the rule. At last, the high court took the city’s side and upheld the rule. One of the health observers suggested that the counting of the calories is not the correct method in maintaining healthy weight.
As per Dr. Colin.T.Campbell, a distinguished retired professor of nutrition from Cornell University, the key to combat obesity is eating the right kinds of food. The recommended dietary guideline for adults is 2,000 calories per day depending on their age, activity and gender.
