West Palm Beach, Florida (CaymanMama.com) — The launch of the iPhone one year ago dramatically increased interest in touch screen technology and cell phone manufacturers took notice.

Jennifer Colegrove, analyst at the iSuppli Corporation said, “After the iPhone came out, a lot of mobile phone companies said ‘Oh, I can make that kind of touch-screen mobile phone, too.”

Sprint Nextel Corporation recently released a touch screen mobile phone called the Samsung Instinct, which is reminiscent of the iPhone. In addition, Verizon Wireless launched its initial two mobile phones which use touch screens as their key interface. Sony Ericsson will introduce its foremost touch screen model in the next few months and Research In Motion Ltd is reported to be manufacturing a touch screen edition of the BlackBerry.

Colegrove estimates that almost 341 million touch screen phones will be transported all over the world this year, compared to the  218 million touch screen phones in 2007 and 81 million touch screens in 2006.

Besides the iPhone, new phones in Asia determine demand for the touch screen phones, which enables users to write Japanese or Chinese characters on the phone screen, generally with the help of a Stylus.

The majority of the touch sensors are designed in Taiwan, Japan and China. In the U.S., the main participants in the field of touch screens include Santa Clara’s Synaptics Inc. which provides components to Apple and 3M Co., though it primarily offers large screens for ATMs and monitors more than the portable electronics. Cypress Semiconductor Corp. of San Jose produces chips which controls the sensors of the iPhone.

Synaptics Inc. has an increasing business offering touch screens for cell phones. It make use of a specific kind of touch screen sensor called a projected capacitive. Nevertheless, prior to the launch of the iPhone, Synaptics was struggling in order to convince producers that technology was superior as compared to the cheaper resistive screens.
