Virginia Beach, Virginia (CaymanMama.com) — According to a study published on Monday, walking every day can help to control Type 2 diabetes to a great extent. Those who are obese will have to exercise a little harder to achieve the same goals.

Michael Trenell of Britain Newcastle University and his colleagues wrote an article in the Diabetes Care journal that a simple 45-minute  walk each day has helped many people who had diabetes to use blood sugar in a better manner. Trenell said, “People often find the thought of going to the gym quite daunting, but what we’ve found is that nearly everyone with diabetes is able to become more active through walking.” The Newcastle team paired ten Type 2 diabetes patients who were without similar conditions of height, age and weight and asked all of them to take about 10,000 steps every day.

Researchers say that the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans revealed that people who walked for 45 minutes every day burned approximately about 20 % more fat. This, in turn, increased the ability of their muscles to store sugars and thereby helped them control their diabetes. Trenell also said, “What is exciting about this study is that it provides an immediate way to help control diabetes without any additional drugs.”

Diabetes affects approximately 246 million adults across the world according. It also accounts for about 6% of all deaths. Type 2 diabetes accounts for almost 90% of diabetes cases in all and is related closely to physical inactivity and obesity.

Diabetes and obesity are both growing problems due to the fact that developing nations are adopting western lifestyles. According to the International Diabetes Federation, that trend will propel the number of people suffering from diabetes to about 380 million by 2025.
