Baggage glitches at American Airlines
2008-08-02 18:16:41 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)New York City, New York (CaymanMama.com) — The huge collection of baggage at Kennedy Airport’s American Airlines terminal was all gone on Thursday morning – a signal that the baggage problem which snarled the airport’s operations just a day before — was actually getting sorted out.
A malfunctioning baggage conveyor resulted in flight delays as well as long lines at terminal 8, but these errors were not at all evident on Thursday.
The way the routine work was carried out was a welcome contrast to the confusion at the terminal on Wednesday. The confusion occurred when the bar code reader was unable to sort the baggage compelling the airline to defer dozens of flights.
Hesitant passengers who had flown all over the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean decided to board their respective flights without their baggage as they accepted the assurances of airline authorities that their luggage would be brought later on.
According to Ned Raynolds, the spokesman of American Airlines, “We have a very different situation at JFK today.” He added that three flights were canceled on Thursday and two of them were moved to LaGuardia Airport.
This decision was made Wednesday night at 11:30 pm, when technicians and engineers showed uncertainty about correcting the glitches for Thursday’s flights.
Raynolds told media that the software problems were fixed by 3 am. The system that uses bar codes to match luggage to the conveyor belts, flights and routes was back in service. Even after the repair, travelers like Alvaro Bartlett and Belen Gimenez, both from Barcelona, continued to experience the fallout on Thursday.
Bartlett and Gimenez visited from Barcelona on Wednesday and reached American Airlines just to find that the line was snaking through the entire terminal as well as onto the pavement.
