Manhattan, New York (CaymanMama.com) — The Port Authority is threatening to block a Bush administration plan regarding the slots of auction at three major airports in New York City, claiming that the process is not going to reduce delays but only increase ticket prices.

The Port Authority which manages LaGuardia, Newark and Kennedy airports issued a legal notice refusing the acceptance of any of the government-auctioned flights. This notice was issued on its official website as well as to the airlines.

The agency also claims that it has the authorized right not to let the auctioned flights fly, however, a lawyer representing the US Department of Transportation that initially proclaimed the plan, called the move illegitimate.

Sen. Charles Schumer who is pushing the bill in the Congress that could slay the auction plan of the administration was full of praise for the stance taken by the port authority.

He commented, “The bottom line is this harebrained, untested scheme will cause chaos at our airports, raise fares and reduce travel options, and not ease delays one bit.” He further added, “The DOT needs to back down from this crusade and finally take the obvious steps of updating antiquated technology and fully staffing New York’s air traffic control towers so we can finally deliver some long overdue relief.”

US airports experienced near record delays during the last year, and the government says that backups in the New York City were incumbent upon for 2 out of 3 flights deferred in fifteen minutes or more.

As public annoyance surged, the White House insisted upon taking action and Mary Peters, Transportation Secretary announced the plan of auction slot.

Under this plan, the government is required to have carriers at the three  airports for the purpose of auctioning off 10-20% of the existing slots in the period of 5 years and probably retire others, in proportion of the number of flights at peak hours.
