Spread of AIDS in African Americans requires a new awareness
2008-08-05 14:44:40 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Columbus, Ohio (CaymanMama.com) — Former President Bill Clinton said on Monday that new U.S. figures emphasize the requirement for a fresh awareness to the malady of AIDS at home, chiefly among African Americans.
Referring to the data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which indicated that the epidemic in the nation has been undervalued by about 40%, Clinton vowed that the resources of his foundation would be refocused on the domestic problems of AIDS.
Clinton also added, “For Americans, this should be a wake-up call” while addressing the International AIDS Conference here. “Even as we fight the epidemic globally, we must focus at home. And I intend to do so with my foundation.”
Until now, HIV/AIDS initiatives of the William J. Clinton Foundation has focused on Africa, the Caribbean and overseas. The foundation has been credited with assisting renegotiations to radically lower rates of diagnostic tests and anti-retroviral therapies in places like Tanzania, Haiti, Rwanda and Senegal.
Clinton also suggested he is going to target the problems of domestic AIDS, although he did not give specifics. His office in New York City has not responded to requests for further information.
Phil Wilson, one of the prominent voices for the problems of AIDS in the community of African Americans, said he was touched when Clinton spoke about the health catastrophe at home.
Wilson, chief executive of the Institute of Black AIDS, commented in an interview after the speech, “I have been extremely disappointed with the Clinton Foundation, especially with it headquartered in Harlem of all places, that it has been silent on this issue.” He further added, “I’m very grateful, and it is appropriate that President Clinton is committed to taking this on.”
Wilson also said that whenever he visits Africa, he is frequently asked why Americans visit halfway all over the world offering advice to curb the spread of AIDS, despite the fact that there is epidemic among people of African Americans.
