U.S. Army researcher commits suicide
2008-08-07 16:45:20 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Jacksonville, Florida (CaymanMama.com) – According to officials, a researcher of the U.S. army, Bruce Ivins, committed suicide on Wednesday as federal officers were preparing to arrest him for anthrax attacks in 2001. Five people died and he had been expelled from his laboratory since November 2007.
According to personnel of the institute, Ivins had been appointed to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases to work on new and improved anthrax vaccines in Maryland where he had been working for the last 28 years.
Documents of the federal court released this Wednesday highlighted the case of the government against Ivins. The fact of the matter is that Ivins is seen as the sole suspect for the letter-borne attacks. He has been cast as the prime suspect for distributing anthrax used to threaten people.
Ivins took his life with an overdose of the medication acetaminophen (paracetamol) before he could be arrested. Ivins’ attorney as well as some of his co-workers had maintained incorruptibility whereas prosecutors asserted that the case would close with his death.
USAMRIID said that the officers at Ft. Detrick were cooperating well with the FBI on the matter. In another statement they commented, “It has always been considered possible that a U.S. government employee could have been responsible for the letters. For that reason, USAMRIID leadership and staff cooperated fully through every phase of the investigation.”
There are various labs at the facility of Ft. Detrick, including the National Cancer Institute laboratories. The work of USAMRIID has not been classified properly, despite the fact that it includes various researches upon the potential warfare agents of biology and defenses against all of them.
