First Florida cardiac patient to benefit from Impella – heart assist device
2008-08-12 03:50:37 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Miami, Florida (CaymanMama.com) –According to a MiamiHerald.com report, fate brought 63-year old Carl Alessi, a chronic cardiac patient and grandfather of 3 with a failing heart to Dr. William O’Neill, a doctor at the University of Miami, who performed an angioplasty using a new heart assist device known as Impella. Alessi’s heart was pumping just a just 15% of its capacity which the doctors had deemed inoperable since his heart was too weak to perform an open heart surgery. Alessi, now cured from his ailment, says that he is returning to his normal routine life. He said, ”I’m going back to everyday life with my own heart.”
Though Impella has been used for years in Europe, it was used for the first time in Florida. It is a heart surgery assist device what pumps blood into the arteries and is placed outside the heart.
Dr. O’Neill was the chief researcher during the trial period of Impella and worked on it for 4 years. Impella’s clinical trials are currently in its second phase and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in May. O’Neill is also the Executive Dean of clinical affairs at the Miller School of Medicine.
This is good news for patients who suffer from severe heart conditions. Impella is used to restore the health of the patient and give the patient the opportunity for their life to get back to normal. Two more patients are schedule to have an angioplasty done with the help of the new heart assist device.
