Hurricane Season 2008 - Above average season predicted
2008-08-13 14:13:59 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Cayman Islands News)Galveston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — With Hurricane Dolly missing the Cayman Islands by inches and with four other tropical storms already from in the Atlantic basin, the U.S. weather department predicts “above average hurricane season this year.”
The forecasters now predict between 14 - 18 storms which might include seven to ten hurricanes. Three to six major category 3 hurricanes have been forecasted.
The lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA climate protection center, Gerry Bell, has been on hurricane watch for days and says that top indications show enhanced oceanic activities that have increased the chances of intensive hurricane activity not seen after 1995. The intensified seasonal activities have arisen due to weaker winds, active West African monsoons, reduced wind shears and a warmer Atlantic ocean.
The forecasters also spoke about the oceanic conditions that would help in the development of these named storms. They say that the atmosphere and ocean condition across the Atlantic basin aided early seasonal activity along with ocean surface warming in the central and the east tropical Pacific.
Forecasters also predict an above average hurricane land fall in the Caribbean.
