Obesity cannot be linked to heart diseases, study shows
2008-08-13 15:46:41 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Providence, Rhode Island (CaymanMama.com) — According to a survey conducted recently by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, more than almost half of people who are overweight and about one third of Americans who are obese do not have higher risks of cardiac diseases.
These results were published on Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The results defy the traditional wisdom and beliefs that fat leads to heart related ailments.
Rachel Wildman, the co-author of the report said, “We kind of got it into our heads that obesity is automatically bad for you, but this study shows that there is a subset of obese individuals who don’t develop adverse effects.” The study also observed that about 24% of Americans that have recommended weights display certain risk factors such as abnormal blood pressure levels, blood fats, blood sugar and cholesterol.
The researchers analyzed government data taken from 5,440 people. These people were made to fill out questionnaires and were those whose risk factor levels were measured between 1999 and 2004. It was discovered that about 51% of adults who were overweight translated to about 36 million people all over the nation who have normal heart disease indicator levels. It was only 32% of the obese people who were found as “metabolically healthy”.
Wildman said, “We were surprised by the magnitude, if you’re obese, it doesn’t mean you have the risk factors, and if you’re not obese, it doesn’t mean you don’t.” She also emphasized the fact that the study only looked at the indicators of cardiovascular diseases and not the actual harmful conditions or illnesses that were related to obesity.
