Replacement of space shuttle will not fly until 2014
2008-08-13 15:32:51 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Technology News)Atlanta, Georgia (CaymanMama.com) — NASA has finally put off its plans launch the next generation Orion spacecraft for about a year or so. This action has been considered a setback against the efforts in order to have a successor to the space shuttles that are aging, according to the space agency. Program manager, Jeff Hanley reported that September 2014 is the expected time when the launch of the Orion spacecraft’s first crew is scheduled.
Officials of the NASA have planned to wrap up the International Space Station assembly along with retiring the fleet of the space shuttle in 2010 and freeing the cash in order to build and fly the new proposed spacecraft. Financial concerns are found to be the root of this decision but NASA is providing itself with wiggle room where it will be dealing with various unforeseen technical difficulties cropping up every now and then, reported Hanley.
Hanley further added, “It’s the unknown unknowns that we have to hedge against. Having some number of months of schedule flexibility to meet our commitment, in addition to having some number of months of cost — dollars — flexibility, is the key to keeping ourselves in a healthy posture.”
Orion, popularly known as “Apollo on steroids”, has been designed to ferry astronauts to and from the space station and finally back towards the moon. Orion, unlike other space shuttles that land similar to that of an airplane, is like a capsule, which will soon parachute an excellent landing at the Edwards Air Force Base in California.
The recent goal of September 2014 is one year later as compared to the plans made by NASA in order to launch its first Orion. The program managers of NASA were hoping that they would be flying the latest vehicle much sooner as compared to the large gap between the shuttle flight and the flight of the first Orion.
