Houston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The logic behind a new article reported by Health Day News seems so simple that parents had better heed the warnings for their uncoordinated children and begin taking steps to assist in their long term healthy weight and lifestyle.

A research study published on BMJ.com on Wednesday and as part of the ongoing National Child Development Study in Great Britain found that a deficiency of physical coordination and body control during the childhood years can now be linked to an increased risk of adult obesity.

The study further found that previous studies conducted on the tie between coordination and obesity shows that poor cognitive function in children could also be linked to Type 2 diabetes in addition to obesity. The research study based their findings on a group 11,041 individuals and the results were clear: children who displayed poor motor control (specifically with their hands), poor coordination and an overall state of clumsiness at the ange of 7 were more likely to be overweight adults.

The findings noted, “Adjusting for factors that may influence the results, such as childhood body mass and family social class, did not change the results. However, the study did not delve into specific biological processes that may explain poorer physical control and coordination in childhood with adult obesity.”
