Batman beaten by Tropic Thunder at box office

Hollywood, California (CaymanMama.com) — The big screen has been swarmed with box office giants raking in hundreds of millions of dollars this summer. Robert Downey Jr., star of the hit ‘Iron Man’ scored his second number one movie this summer on Sunday as the Hollywood spoof, ‘Tropic Thunder’ ended the reign of ‘The Dark Knight’. This new change of favorites came as a surprise since ‘The Dark Knight’ had been ruling the box office for about a month. Now, however, with the release of ‘Tropic Thunder’ the box office has seen a turn over.

‘Tropic Thunder’ is a farcical-combat movie that is made within a comic set up and stars comedic geniuses Jack Black and Ben Stiller. The movie grossed over $26 million the first weekend while in Canadian and U.S. theaters, beginning the 5-day estimated totals from the opening on Wednesday to about $37 million. Robert Downey Jr. challenges the norm by playing the role of a black action hero. He also starred in ‘Iron Man’, this summer’s first flick that topped the charts.

In ‘Tropic Thunder’, Stiller, Black and Downey Jr. star as Hollywood actors who are completely self absorbed and are caught up in real life battles with the narco-terrorists during the filming of a war movie in South East Asia. This film was directed, co-produced and co-written by Ben Stiller.

The breakout blockbuster movie, ‘The Dark Knight’ (the Batman sequel) slipped to the second position in ticket sales in the fifth weekend of its release with about $16.8 million. But as per the box office tracking service, Media by Numbers, it broke the commercial barriers that came along its way by actually becoming the second highest grossing movie ever.
