Christina Applegate free of breast cancer after double mastectomy
2008-08-19 17:10:28 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)New York City, New York (CaymanMama.com) — Christina Applegate, star of “Samantha Who”, is seeing the positive side of the dark cloud cast upon her after being diagnosed with breast cancer, something her mother also suffered from.
According to the Associated Press, Applegate gave an interview on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” (her first interview since announcing her diagnosis) and broke the news that he had undergone a double mastectomy three weeks ago. Applegate, 36, will also undergo reconstructive surgery over the next eight months.
The postive-thinking actress chose to remove both of her breasts in spite of the fact that the cancer was contained in only one of her breasts. Miraculously, Applegate is now cancer-free and decided that the operation was “a logical decision.” With a history of cancer in her genes, Applegate watched as her mother battled breast cancer. Applegate said that she tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation linked to breast as well as ovarian cancer.
“I just wanted to kind of be rid of it. So this was the choice I made and it was a tough one,” Applegate explained. “”Sometimes, you know, I cry and sometimes I scream and I get really angry and I get really like, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. And I think that’s — it’s all part of healing, and anyone who’s going through it out there, it’s OK to cry. It’s OK to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to.”
To educate the public on breast cancer, Applegate is set to appear on an hour long television special, “Stand Up to Cancer,” which will be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC on September 5th and will also act as a fundraiser for cancer research.
