After Musharraf - who will be the next President
Islamabad: Amid the festivities after Musharraf’s resignation the leading political parties of the country met to decide upon some burning issues of selection and election of the new President of the country.
The political alliance also discussed reinstatement of deposed judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. Pakistan Muslim League (N) is forcing immediate announcement on this matter, while Asif Ali Zardari has requested for some time to decide the modalities.
Changing the provincial administration set up is also on the table. The political parties are seeking change of governors of all the four provinces.
UK gives mixed response on Musharraf’s resignation
London: British Foreign Secretary David Miliband stressed on the importance of friendship between UK and Pakistan. While giving his views on Musharraf’s resignation, he said that years of Musharraf’s rule brought significant benefits for the economy of the country and for the fight against terrorism.
He also said that end of Musharraf’s era is of vital importance as it will strengthen the democratic forces inside the country and bring stability to unstable political democratic forces and to the failing economy of the country created over the past months after February election.
Muhammadmian Soomro takes over as the acting president of Pakistan
Islamabad: Musharraf’s resignation was received late last night at the office of the speaker of the National Assembly and was accepted immediately upon receipt. Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker of the National Assembly was at the Prime Minister’s house attending a dinner hosted by the PM when the resignation was received by her office.
Muhammadmian Soomro, leader of Senate took over as the acting president of the country.
Musharraf should be tried for treason - Aitzaz
Lahore: The President of Supreme Court Bar Association, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said yesterday that Musharraf must be tried in the court for his crimes. He should be given a fair trial on charges of treason and his friends like Malik Qayyum, the attorney general, Hafiz Peerzada and Sharifuddin Peerzada must represent Musharraf.
Musharraf to search for new home after Umra
Washington: Musharraf has planned to proceed for Umra shortly. He will, by then, decide where to seek refuge. He has 4 places in mind where he can live. These places include Saudi Arabia, Turkey, USA and Britain. He preferred to remain in Pakistan under the protection of the army immediately after resignation rather than fleeing the country as proposed by some close aids
