Singer Sheryl Crow urges public to vote with free music
2008-08-21 16:26:35 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)Sedona, Arizona (CaymanMama.com) — Grammy Award-winning singer, Sheryl Crow is using her celebrity status–and her album “Detours”– to encourage people to vote, a tactic she calls a “Tupperware party approach” to enticing the public to use their voice in this year’s election.
According to the Associated Press, the singer has announced an initiative on Wednesday that will give a free, digital copy of her album to the first 50,000 who register at least three of their friends to vote. In a telephone interview from her stop in Los Angeles, Crow said, “I hope people wake up and emotionally engage in issues.”
This offer aims to jump start the Rock the Vote’s voter registration drive. In addition, Crow is extending an offer to get a free download of her song “Gasoline”, a song with politics at its core, to an person who logs on or belongs to the Rock the Vote website, notes Heather Smith, the organization’s executive director.
Crow, 46, has always been active in humanitarian movements using her celebrity status to engage the people and encourage them to make good choices. As one of the founding artists of Rock the Vote, Crow has been touched by breast cancer and used that low period to empower herself. She explained that her album “Detours” is a perfect soundtrack since the lyrics cover such sensitive topics as adoption, breast cancer, the war in Iraq, the environment and Hurricane Katrina.
In her interview, Crow said, “It’s about the issues that everyone’s talking about, but there’s a lot of hope. At this moment in my life, writing about anything else would be uninteresting and impossible because I feel such urgency.”
