Breaking News: Settlement reached in fatal NYC ferry crash

Staten Island, New York (CaymanMama.com) — According to a report released by the Associated Press on Monday, the attorneys of a widow of a victim killed in a ferry crash in New York City’s Staten Island in 2003 has finally settled her wrongful death claim against the Big Apple’s capital city in the amount of $8.7 million.

The announcement was made by the lawyers of Kathy Healy and her four children in regards to Healy’s husband, John, who was involved and killed in a fatal ferry crash when the ferry collided into a dock going full speed.

Kathy Healy’s trail for her lawsuit was scheduled to begin in federal court on Monday and the city’s corporation counsel did not provide the media with any comment.

The details of the crash revealed the the boat’s pilot was taking painkillers and suffering from extreme exhaustion. The pilot has since plead guilty to negligent manslaughter and being untruthful to case investigators. He was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

The sentences didn’t end at the pilot of the boat as it was also reported that the city’s ferry director was slapped with a year in prison after he plead guilty to negligent manslaughter and admitted to failing to enforce a safety policy.
