Abandoned baby rescued by dog
2008-08-27 18:33:32 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - World News News)Buenos Aires (CaymanMama.com) — A newborn baby abandoned outdoors in a pile of boxes was carried to safety by a mother dog that brought the baby into her pen with her puppies, according to Argentine media.
The naked baby girl was only a few hours old when she was found by farmer Fabio Anze on his farm in the rural area around La Plata, 40 miles south of Buenos Aires. Anze told police he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.
According to Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires, the farmer went outside and found the baby lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies.
Anze found the baby Thursday, being kept warm among his dog China’s puppies. He then called the police and the baby was taken to a hospital.
The temperature outside was 37 degrees, barely above freezing.
The dog had apparently carried the baby approximately 54 yards from where her mother had abandoned her to where the puppies were huddled, police said.
“She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” Salcedo said. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this, the baby would have died. The dog is a hero to us.”
In spite of the fact that the baby girl had superficial scratches, bruises and blood coming from her mouth, she was in good shape, explained Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital.
The next morning, the 14-year-old girl who gave birth to the baby outdoors was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities that the 8-pound, 13-ounce infant is hers, Melia said.
The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized. She has said little about the incident.
The baby has been transferred to a children’s hospital in La Plata.
