Miami, Florida (CaymanMama.com) — Just after making landfall in Haiti, weakened hurricane Gustav turned its way westward. The Weather Channel reported that as Gustav moved away from Haiti, it regained its strength. Gustav is responsible for killing 17 people in Haiti.

Reports indicate that a Hurricane Warning is now in effect for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Gustav strengthens just east of the island. The hurricane his predicted to move gradually eastwards towards the Cayman Islands.

Gustav is expected to move towards the Gulf of Mexico by the weekend. With the storm moving westward and after coming into contact with the warm waters of the Caribbean, it is expected that Gustav might gather enough strength to convert into a category 1 hurricane and could be cause a major threat to the U.S. Gulf Coast. The warm waters can strengthen the hurricane as it approaches the U.S. coast.

In the meantime, oil prices have registered a rise bringing the cost to $116.27 a barrel as the US government is forced to shut down the offshore rigs that take care of 1/4 supply of crude oil to the US.

The governments of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands have raised a hurricane warning. The airports will be shut down and all emergency measures will be in place well ahead of the expected time when the storm is expected to the make landfall on the Caribbean Islands.
