New York City, New York (CaymanMama.com) — Here in the States, clean drinking water is never farther than a walk to the kitchen sink where clean, drinkable water flows cool and abundant. However, in developing countries all over the world, drinking water is miles and hours away from being anything close to consumable. That is why an organization called Charity: Water is calling on the compassion of kind-hearted givers who want to see the state of those nations improve–one glass of water at a time.
The statistics are staggering…and heartbreaking. Charity: Water’s website states, “Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many people in the developing world, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to fetch water that is likely to make them sick. Those hours are crucial, preventing many from working or attending school.
Additionally, collecting water puts them at greater risk of sexual harassment and assault. Children are especially vulnerable to the consequences of unsafe water. Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old.”
Imagine your child drinking murky water from a shallow ditch and then you will see how so many children live each and every day. In fact, one in six people on this world made up of water doesn’t have access to drinkable water to meet the most basic of our needs to live. The human body cannot go twelve hours without water and for some, that one sip is several miles away.
Charity: Water was founded by Scott Harrison who, on his 32nd birthday, wanted to make his day really count and set of to West Africa after accepting a position as a photojournalist. His journey took him farther than he ever imagined as he encountered a hospital that had no clean drinking water whatsoever. After falling in love with the people and capturing the spirit of Africa through the lens of his camera, he vowed to give something back by helping to dig wells that would produce clean water for the masses.
Now in its second year, Charity: Water has raised over $3 million and funded over 600 water projects in the developing countries that need help the most and given a new lease on life to the people who are enjoying the refreshing taste of healthy water.
