Hurricane Ike evacuates millions of Texans

Houston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Hurricane Ike is proving to be a force to be reckoned with as a recent report by MSNBC.com shed light on the evacuation situation. According to the report on Wednesday, thousands of Texans have been strongly encouraged to evacuate as the hurricane edged closer to the coast. Officials are heavily considering the mandatory order of the evacuation of another 1 million residents.

Washington is not taking the situation lightly as President Bush took precautionary measures by declaring a state of emergency in Texas. This declaration put preparations into full effect by triggering federal officials to work with state and local agencies to brace the coastal cities for the wrath of Ike.

Hurricane Ike may be the next historical hurricane following Katrina. According to MSNBC.com, “If Texas officials order a mandatory exodus, it would be the first large-scale evacuation in South Texas history. State and county officials let people decide for themselves whether to leave a hurricane area until just before Hurricane Rita struck the Gulf Coast in 2005. Now county officials can order people out of harm’s way.”

Poverty-stricken Rio Grande Valley would be most effected by the mandatory evacuation as it is home to thousands of immigrants who fear that evacuating would cause them to be deported if authorities stopped them on their trek. Hidalgo County Judge J.D. Salinas noted that if the evacuation is enforced, officials of the county will personally visit the immigrant neighborhoods to evacuate the residents by force.

To ensure the safe evacuation of those immigrants, federal authorities have assured the population that they would not be checking resident’s immigration status at loading zones or checkpoints. However, this reassurance was not enough to console those residents who are still refusing to board buses headed for safety or go to shelters for fear of deportation.

Earlier today, mandatory evacuation orders were put into effect for several small coastal communities in Brazoria County, including Hideaway Gulf, Turtle Cove, Surfside, Quintana, Treasure Island and Rivers End. Ike’s path is being carefully monitored as it is possible for the rest of the county to be evacuated.

Corpus Christi is also on full alert as medical patients and those requiring constant care were transported by bus to San Antonio while area schools were closed for the remained of the week. Weather forecasters warned that Hurricane Ike could hit anywhere on the Texas coast on Saturday morning with Corpus Christi being the largest concern for damage by the storm.
