Arctic Sea Ice Melting

Detroit, Michigan (CaymanMama.com) — Global warming is creating larger and larger problems on a global scale creating excruciatingly hot summers, deadly hurricane and tornado seasons and now even more magnified, the melting and sinking of crucial Arctic sea ice.

According to a report by the Associated Press, scientists are at full alarm about the amount of Arctic sea ice that has melted and shunk this summer alone which has proven to be the second lowest level on record. The alarming trend is worrying scientists who fear that the worst is still yet to come.

“The ice covered 1.74 million square miles on Friday, marking a low point for this summer, according to NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. Last summer, the sea ice covered only 1.59 million square miles, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1979,” the article stated.

Artic sea ice is vital to the planet for a number of reasons. The large masses of majestic ice float on the surface of the ocean and expands in the winter and draws back in the summer months. Recently, however, the sea ice has been remarkably less thick during the winter months when it should be most abundant.

As a critical element to the global weather patterns, sea ice serves as both a cooling refrigerator for the earth and a sun reflector of harmful UV rays and intense heat. During recent times, the trends have shown the man-made global warming problems will cut the entire life span of the Arctic sea ice so that it may be completely gone within five to ten years. Scientists are sending out their warning signals in full alarm.

Walt Meier of the snow and ice data center noted that although the Arctic sea ice didn’t recede this year as much as last summer, “there was no real sign of recovery.” He also noted that 2008 has been cooler overall and weather conditions haven’t been as bad as some others.

“We’re kind of in a new state of the Arctic basically, and it’s not a good one,” Meier said. “We’re definitely sliding towards a point where the summer sea ice will be gone.”
