New York City, New York (CaymanMama.com) — Lawyers are a different kind of breed and most have the law in their blood having been raised in a family of attorneys and judges. Frank Floriani, a prominent New York Admiralty and Maritime trial lawyer at the prestigious law firm of Sullivan Papain Block McGrath & Cannavo P.C., is one of these lawyers who grew up learning the value of the law from his father.
“It was my father who was a lawyer,” Floriani said. “I grew up with him teaching me the value of what our justice system does in terms of how it ensures the rights of individuals, so it was really a natural for me coming to the law as a career.” As an attorney in the great state of New York for over 30 years, Floriani joined the firm in 1986 and now says that the firm has now “become home” for him. With such a comfort level in the justice system and knowing the ins and outs of how the law works, it is safe to say that Floriani is an authority when it comes to his areas of practice.
What is Admiralty Law?
According to Wikipedia, admiralty law (also referred to as maritime law) is “a distinct body of law which governs maritime questions and offenses. It is a body of private international law governing the relationships between private entities which operate vessels on the oceans. It is distinguished from the Law of the Sea, which is a body of public international law dealing with navigational rights, mineral rights, jurisdiction over coastal waters and international law governing relationships between nations.”
As one of the more interesting branches of the law, Floriani says there are many ancient maritime concepts of it that have quite a history and that are still being used in today’s justice system. In the dangerous trade of jobs at sea, seamen face many perils and the law has protection in place that keeps the best interest of the seamen and crew members in mind.
What is Maritime Law and what types of injuries occur in this branch of law?
Maritime law are rules of law that the courts have adopted to protect workers on various types of sea vessels. Regarding the types of injuries workers face, Floriani states, “The perils of the sea expose the members of these crews to all types of injuries. We’ve seen fractures with serious results, death cases, brain injuries, you name it!”
