Virginia Beach, Virginia (CaymanMama.com) — Actors of film and screen are mourning the loss of one of the most remarkable screen legends ever known. Oscar-winning actor and passionate lover of life Paul Newman lost his battle to cancer on Saturday at the age of 83.
“Paul Newman’s craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all,” Newman’s Own foundation Vice-Chairman Robert Forrester said in a statement from Westport, Connecticut.
Newman’s publicist said that the loved actor passed away at his farmhouse near Westport, Connecticut surrounded by family and friends. He was survived by his wife of 50 years, actress Joanne Woodward who also acted as his professional collaborator for nearly as many of those glorious years. He was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, on Jan. 26, 1925.
According to a memorial on E! Online, “In a 52-year screen year, Newman earned the 1986 Best Actor Academy Award for The Color of Money, and pulled in 10 overall nominations—nine for acting, and one for producing 1968 Best Picture contender Rachel, Rachel, which starred Woodward, and which he directed.
Additionally, he received two honorary Oscars, in 1986 and 1994, won one Emmy, for 2005’s Empire Falls, and rated one Tony nomination, for a 2002-03 Broadway revival of Our Town.”
Newman was passionate about racing cars having placed second in the 1979 24-hours-at-Le Mans endurance test. He also helped run one of the most successful race-car teams in motor sports. As a household name, Newman put his face and stamp of approval on items such as popcorn, spaghetti sauce, cookies and other treats through his amazingly successful, charity-funding Newman’s Own brand. As a philanthropist, Newman headed anti-drug campaigns following the 1978 overdose death of his son, 28-year-old Scott Newman.
Although he was never the type to deliberately put his name in the limelight, Newman announced his retirement from acting in 2007. For a while, the state of his health was the subject of debate though Newman did not cite not his health, but his “aging-out memory banks” as the reason for his retirement.
“I’m not able to work anymore…at the level that I would want to,” Newman told Good Morning America. “So I think that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”
Paul Newman will be sorely missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
