Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The annual Islamic Festival of Eid ul-Fitr is being celebrated at the Dallas Convention Center on a beautiful, autumn Wednesday morning. An entire day of family and friends, a feast and prayer make up the festival of Eid.

So what exactly is Eid ul-Fitr? According to Wikipedia, Eid ul-Fitr “is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning “festivity”, while Fiášr means “to break the fast” (and can also mean “nature”, from the word “fitrah”); and so the holiday symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. It is celebrated starting on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal.”

Eid al-Fitr has to do with the communal aspects of the month-long fast, which expresses many of the basic values of the Muslim community. Fasting is believed by some to exalt fundamental distinctions, praise the power of the spiritual realm, and acknowledge the subordination of the physical world.

Eid is celebrated by Muslims around the world, as well as non-Muslims in Muslim majority parts of the world. During the observance and celebration, there is typically festive family meals and gift giving as well as congregational prayer, giving to charity, wearing new clothes, and eating delicious, sweet foods.

The end of Ramadan is a family affair and is announced by e-mail, postings on various religious websites, and phone calls to family. Muslim employees usually try to make arrangements for a light work day on the Eid day, though some lucky North American Muslims may be able to take the entire day off.

The morning prayer lasts from 9 am until 11 am and thereafter, a day of celebration, feast and fun begins. Eid is truly a time to give in charity to those who are in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy. The Dallas Convention Center is proud to welcome the Muslim community of Dallas!
