Bollywood strike ends

Hollywood, California (CaymanMama.com) — The money-making machine that is the Bollywood movie industry came to a screeching halt on Wednesday after approximately 10,000 television and film workers went on strike protesting against the inadequate and irregular pay, the presence of non-union workers on set, and a grueling work schedule that had them working too many hours per day.

Reports indicated that, in some cases, payments to workers had been delayed for as long as a year, and even when workers received payment, the checks were for less hours than they originally worked.

Ending up better than the U.S.’s Hollywood strike that lasted for months, the Bollywood strike came to an end after only two days. On Friday, Bollywood producers and the union announced that they had reached an agreement to give workers better pay and more satisfactory working conditions.

Dinesh Chaturvedi, the head of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FIWCE), confirmed “The strike is over.”

Additionally, Ratan Jain, president of the Association of Motion Picture and TV Programme Producers said, “The strike is over and tomorrow (Saturday) we will resume work.”

Workers should feel pleased that a deal was reached so quickly avoiding additional lost pay and cut productivity. American movie executives and media moguls in the States should take a tip from the Bollywood industry and treat their workers as fairly as possible keeping them happy and the viewing audience constantly supplied with quality films.
