New reports claim that the standard vitamin D recommendations are inadequate and new studies show that pediatricians recommend doubling the daily recommendation for infants, children and teens.
Houston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — According to a recent news report by the Associated Press, some of the nation’s leading pediatricians are now saying that old recommendations for vitamin D are insufficient and are now indicating that children ranging from from newborns to teens should get double the usually recommended amount of vitamin D.
This new report comes as a result of evidence that shows double the recommended dose of vitamin D may help prevent serious diseases in the long run. As a new recommended dosage, 400 units of daily vitamin D will need to be administered to millions of children via a daily vitamin D supplement. This also includes breast-fed infants, formula-fed infants and teens who drink little or no milk, as per the Academy of Pediatrics.
Although it has been suggested that breast feeding provides overall better nutrients for a developing baby, formula also contains vitamin D, so infants on formula generally don’t need supplements. In the new study, however, the academy recommended tjat breast-feeding for at least the first year of life and breast milk is sometimes deficient.
Most store-bought milk is already sold having been previously fortified with vitamin D. The problem is that most children and teens don’t drink enough of it to meet the new requirement, according to Dr. Frank Greer, the report’s co-author. Four cups daily is a standard requirement.
According to the report, “The new advice is based on mounting research about potential benefits from vitamin D besides keeping bones strong, including suggestions that it might reduce risks for cancer, diabetes and heart disease. But the evidence isn’t conclusive and there’s no consensus on how much of the vitamin would be needed for disease prevention.”
The last vitamin D advisory came in 2003 from the academy stating that 200 units daily was recommended.
In fact, 200 daily units is the governmental recommendation for children and adults up to age 50; 400 units is recommended for adults aged 51 to 70 and 600 units for those aged 71 and up. For those youngsters that can’t stand drinking their milk, vitamin D is sold in drops for young children, capsules and tablets.
