2008-10-16 15:58:05 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Dallas News Law News)Dallas TX: Fred Baron, the Dallas Tort lawyer who is dying from Cancer has been refused compassionate use of experimental drug called Tysabri says Mr. Baron’s son. The Dallas lawyer’s ailing condition was made public by Andrew Barron, his son, who wrote in his blog that his father, Fred Baron might not live long as he in the final stage of ‘multiple myeloma’ cancer of bone marrow.
The doctors, Andrew says, want to use the drug saying that though Tysabri does not treat cancer and is approved for multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease it might help Fred Baron as Tysabri is an antibody, a protein that generates particular reaction from the patients immune system. The doctors at the Mayo Clinic think that as the myeloma cells react the same way as the MS or Crohns cells do, the drug might help in treating cancer bringing relief to Mr. Baron.
The makers of the drug Biogen Idec, think otherwise, they think that allowing Mr. Baron to use the drug might stop its use by other patients. The Biogen spokes man said, “Mr. Baron does not qualify.”
Mr. Baron, who is fighting with cancer, had founded Baron & Budd law firm and is well known in the lawyer’s community and the legal circle as “The King of the Toxic Trots”. The Dallas Trot lawyer stopped practicing law and began his political career several years from now. He was the major fundraiser for the Democratic party where Mr. Baron and Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk sponsored fund raiser for Barrak Obama who was running for State Senate in the year 2004.
Mr. Barons friends and family are hopeful that Biogen will allow Mr. Baron the use of drug. Senator Kerry said “We are praying for a miracle. We are hoping some resolution comes of this, we hope that he gets a chance to fight.”
