Austin, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Halloween has become a retail frenzy full of costumes, candy and the like that leaves the day after full of piles of discarded materials and trash that is harmful to the environment and racks up quite a bill.

However, with just a few simple steps, parents can still create an imaginative, inexpensive, and eco-friendly costume for the kiddos that is easy on the wallet and the environment.

Take a trip to the thrift store: Thrift stores are a veritable cornucopia of Halloween goodies. Most thrift stores are loaded with bins filled to the brim with pre-made costumes that parents can purchase for only pennies a piece and racks of retro clothes that can morph any kid into a cowboy, princess, super hero, nurse, rock star, or even a tree-hugger!

Let your fingers do the walking: Check out environmentally geared costume websites or do a search on Google for a ton of how-to instructions to make an earthly-friendly costume on a dime.

Make it from scratch: Help your child fashion a prop or special accessory for their costume by using some of the materials you have around the house. Cut a sword or fairy wand out of cardboard and wrap it with aluminum foil; then finish with some sparkles or cording. Make a cape for a magician or princess using a colored or decorative pillowcase. Or make your child’s costume stand out from the crowd by affixing glow in the dark stars.
