New report shows that there are over 30,000 Texans who have yet to claim their government stimulus checks
Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Free money doesn’t seem to be enough to encourage Texans to claim their government stimulus checks, according to a recent report from the Dallas Morning News.
The article explains how nearly 30,700 Texans have failed to get the money due to them due to mailing address errors. The IRS is making attempts to find those taxpayers in order to distribute the approximately $19 million in unclaimed checks, in addition to more than $8 million in regular tax refund payments.
“All you have to do is update your address with the IRS so we can send it to the right place,” Clay Sanford, an IRS spokesman in Dallas, said in a statement.
He added that it is imperative that those taxpayers update their addresses immediately since, by law, stimulus checks must be sent out by Dec. 31. Why would taxpayers want to skip out on getting free cash? The undeliverable stimulus checks average $583, and the regular refund checks that were returned average $897 in Texas.
“Mr. Sanford notes that the vast majority of checks mailed by the IRS are successfully delivered to taxpayers. Of the 116 million economic stimulus payments distributed through September 2008 nationwide, only 279,000 were returned as undeliverable.”
Taxpayers can ensure they get their money by filing tax returns electronically and choosing direct deposit to minimize the possibility of their paperwork or checks being lost or stolen.
To see if you are owed a refund or to update your address, go to irs.gov or call 1-866-234-2942.
