Greenie Report - Think twice before using anti-bacterial soaps

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The recent Global Handwashing Day initiative was kicked off in order to spread the word about disease prevention by washing hands with soap and water.
In light of a global day of sanitization, it is important for people to also be aware of the type of soap they use since, let’s face it, not all soap is the same and many are built up with so many gimmicks, it’s hard to be sure if the soap you are using is the most effective.
According to a Yahoo! Greenie, the main ingredient in most liquid soaps lining store shelves is triclosan, a pesticide that kills bacteria. In recent research studies, it has been found that it isn’t necessary to kill bacteria; one only needs to remove them from the hands.
That said, studies are now indicating that antibacterial soaps are no more effective at banishing germs and preventing illness that regular soap and water. Interesting? Very.
That is highly interesting because now researchers are finding that antibacterial soaps may actually do more harm than good. “There are concerns that triclosan may contribute to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It’s also present in human bodies and breast milk, as well as in streams.
The Environmental Working Group says triclosan has been linked to developmental defects, liver toxicity, and cancer in lab studies. It also may affect thyroid and other hormones that are crucial to normal development.”
So what can a germaphobe or a mother looking to protect her kids from germs do if antibacterial is no longer the way to go? Simple. Avoid any soaps with the label “antibacterial” and look for soaps that tell you if triclosan or triclocarban (a similar compound that’s found more commonly in bar soaps) are active ingredients. If the soap has those compounds, choose a different product.
