AOL.com gets a new look to give it an edge on the competition

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CaymanMama.com) — America Online’s web portal, AOL.com just got a new skin. The site’s redesigned homepage was unveiled on Thursday in the hopes that it will evolve into a central hub for Internet users to social network, use email and more without going to another site.

According to the AFP, AOL.com is the umber four gateway to the web trailing Google, MSN and Yahoo, and revamped its homepage in order to provide more access to users to view outside emails without leaving their hub.

With AOL.com’s “My Networks” feature, users can log onto their social networking accounts on Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, AIM or Twitter directly from the homepage and conduct status updates to all of them at one time saving time and finger-work.

Bill Wilson, executive vice president, AOL Programming said in a statement, “AOL.com is the first traditional big portal to offer access to popular social networking sites all in one place. Now consumers can connect with their numerous networks and information sources all from AOL.com.”

AOL.com has also added a new RSS Feed Browser which creates a new function for users to retrieve news from other sites and watch it scroll at the bottom of their browser like a news ticker.

The “Themes” function will let users personalize the homepage by choosing a background color or upload their own design.

AOL, a subsidiary of media giant Time Warner Inc., used to be a heavy-hitter in the early days of the Internet but has since slipped away from its position of most-used portal. This new skin for AOL.com is an attempt to refashion itself as a user-friendly and modern portal.
