Barack Obama and grandmother

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — With just hours to go before the biggest day in Barack Obama’s political career, sadness has touched his family as his grandmother passed away at age 86.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama announced the death of his grandmother with a heavy heart on Monday and spoke about the woman who helped raise him and who he praised as the “cornerstone” of his family.

Obama announced the sad news in a joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng. Madelyn Dunham passed away after losing her battle with cancer.

He said: “She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances.”

The Illinois senator learned of his grandmother’s death while on the last leg of his campaign trail in Jacksonville, Florida and said he planned to forge ahead with his scheduled campaign appearances.

Late in October, Obama took a short hiatus in his campaigning and flew to Hawaii to be with Dunham.
