Sleep is vital to health and a new study shows that a lack of sleep now adds hypertension to the list of risks involved with not enough shut-eye

Memphis, Tennessee (CaymanMama.com) — Night owls, beware. A new study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found more evidence that not only supports the overall health benefits of sleep, it now shows that those who sleep less than seven and a half hours a day may run a greater risk for heart disease.

What’s more, the risk heightens even further for individuals whose blood pressure spikes overnight.

“Sleep habits have a huge impact on human health,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Kazuo Eguchi of Jichi Medical University in Tochigi, Japan.

Sleep is no small detail in the link between it and good health. In fact, prior studies on the matter have linked improper sleep habits to disorders with dire effects such as obesity and diabetes as well as a higher risk of heart attacks and premature death.

“Sleep is important [for everyone], from children to the elderly,” Eguchi says. “But it is more important when someone has some cardiovascular risk factors like hypertension.”

Typically, blood pressure drops during sleep. If individuals don’t rack up enough sleep hours, it can make hypertension worse, even cause it, or lead to depression and deteriorated immunity, according to previous research.

Therefore, a longer period of sleep is vital for those who already suffer from high blood pressure It is essential to maintain a consistent pattern of sleep in order to avoid hindering the body’s circadian rhythm which is associated with a variety of hormonal, metabolic and cardiovascular problems.
