IMF forces Pakistan to bring agriculture sector into tax net
Washington: If Pakistan wants to increase its revenue it will have to bring the agriculture sector into tax net, said IMF. The IMF board is planned to meet on this week in Washington to finalize the loan to Pakistan to meet its balance of Payment crises. IMF wants Pakistan to do more. The interest rate increase was made by the governor of State Bank of Pakistan as it was one of the conditionality. The IMF is also eying the agricultural sector and wants Pakistan to take immediate measures in imposing income tax as promised by Mr. Shaukat Tareen, adviser to the PM on finance during his meeting with board of IMF.
Pakistan’s deposed Chief Justice of Supreme Court - Iftikhar Chaudhry arrives in New York
New York: A warm welcome awaited the deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan at the New York’s JFK airport. He has arrived in New York to collect the the Honorary Membership to the New York City Bar Association which was announced in absentia in January 2008. The deposed chief justice was under house arrest in Pakistan.
Justice Chaudhry will also be traveling to Boston to receive Medal of Freedom from Harvard Law School on November 18, 2008.
US should recognize Pakistan efforts in war on terror - Zardari
Washington: In a interview with the Washington Post, the Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said that the Pakistan feels the need of fresh dialogue with the new US government. He said that ‘We think we need a new dialogue and we’re hoping that the new (US) government will… understand that Pakistan has done more than they recognize’ and it was a victim of the same insurgency the United States was fighting.”
He said the drone attacks in Pakistan are harming the hearts and minds of people of Pakistan and should be stopped. He said that if US takes Pakistan as it alley than why not give the technology to Pakistan so that the country can fight the war on terror more effectively.
Pakistan has over 80,000 HIV/AIDs cases
Islamabad: The need of creating awareness about HIV/AIDs was stressed by the Manager national Aids Control Program, Dr. Hassan Abbas Rizvi, who divulged that Pakistan has more that 80,000 people who are effected by HIV/Aids. He said that in Pakistan HIV/AIDs has been found in sex workers but if awareness is not created this number can shoot up significantly.
There is no predator attack deal between US and Pakistan - Pakistan Foreign Office
Islamabad: In a denial about the news saying that US and Pakistan have arrived on tactic agreement on drone attacks in Pakistan, the foreign office spokesman, Muhammad Shahid said, ‘There is no such agreement between Pakistan and US on drone attacks.’ Similar reports about a tactical agreement between the two countries had also appeared in the US based news papers, the foreign office said that all such news were mere speculations and not true.
He said that Pakistani government has repeatedly asked the US administration to stop such attacks.
