50,000 jobs cut by Citigroup worldwide

New York: The global financial crises have forced the Citigroup to cut down 50,000 jobs worldwide. The news report stated that “US banking giant tightens its belt further to cope with a global financial crisis and heavy losses.”

Citigroup’s announcement for job cuts came as the bank has suffered billions of dollars in losses linked with mortgage investments and the fall of US estate market and the credit crunch that surfaced this year.

Saudi oil tanker seized by pirates

Dubai (AFP): A Saudi oil carrier Sirius Star was attacked and captured by pirates off the east coast of Africa. The tanker is owned by Saudi Aramco has a crew of 25 people on board. According to the International Marine Bureau 83 ships have been attacked off Somalia, 33 vessels were hijiacked. The pirates still hold 12 ships and over 200 people are still in the hands of pirates.

Gesture of goodwill from Israel - 250 Palestinian prisoners to be released

Jerusalem: During the discussion with the Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas, the Israeli PM promised to release 250 Palestinian prisoners next month before the Haj and Eid holidays begin. The Israeli government spokesman said ‘The 250 prisoners will be released in advance of the upcoming Muslim holiday.’
