Boston, Massachusetts (CaymanMama.com) — The newest James Bond ruled he box office across the globe during the weekend, set off by a record opening in North America, distributor Columbia Pictures said on Sunday.
“Quantum of Solace” had impressive ticket sales selling $70.4 million in its first three days of release in North America. Industry pundits forecasted an opening in the $60 million range.
The last 007 opening in North American was set by “Die Another Day” starring Pierce Brosnan, earning $47.1 million in its first weekend during November 2002.
“Quantum of Solace” and “Casino Royale,” which opened to $40.8 million, both starred Daniel Craig. Contrary to the classic, suave appeal of Sean Connery and Brosnan, the English actor has painted the special agent with a darker, more complicated personality.
According to Reuters, “The new film also earned $56.1 million in 73 countries during the weekend. Having begun its international run two weeks ago, the foreign total now stands at $251.6 million. With a worldwide haul of $322 million, the film is fast approaching the $594 million tally of ‘Casino Royale.’”
The film has already generated some Oscar buzz and should make Fox Searchlight Pictures, a unit of News Corp, very proud.
