Careless extinguishing of student bonfire blamed for 1 of 3 California wildfires

Montecito, California (CaymanMama.com) — Fire officials and state authorities in Southern California are placing the fault of the fires in Santa Barbara on a group of college students who started a bonfire but failed to properly extinguish it prior to leaving the camp site.

According to the Associated Press, authorities received an anonymous tip saying that ten students ten students gathered a week ago near an abandoned home in the hills of Montecito, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said Tuesday.

Authorities did not disclose which college the students attend, but Brown did say that the fire “was the result of carelessness, not criminal intent.” No criminal charges have been filed against the students, but the case will be reviewed further.

The blaze was one of 3 that destroyed parts of sunny Southern California, destroying or damaging 1,000 homes over a span of 65 square miles. The exact causes of the San Fernando Valley and Orange County fires remain unknown, or unreleased.

On Wednesday, President Bush declared California a disaster zone, making federal aid available to the areas affected by the fires. In addition, Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger “signed an executive order waiving state fees for fire victims who need to replace destroyed birth certificates and other documents or obtain state property inspections. The order also waived a one-week waiting period for unemployment insurance applicants who lost their jobs because of the fire.”
