Possible meteor flashes into the northern Alberta skies

Seattle, Washington (CaymanMama.com) — A ball of fire seemed to fall out of the sky in Canada near Alberta on Thursday, stunning residents and creating a loud “boom” that sounded like a bomb going off.

According to reports, around 5:30pm MST, the bolide crashed through the sunset sky and broke up into fragments creating a series of explosions setting off loud boom sounds.

Canadian officials say the meteor may not have actually touched ground.

Space educator Randy Atwood said, “There’s a very good chance it was what we call a bull’s eye, which is a meteorite crossing the sky at extremely quick velocity — very, very fast — and as it hits the atmosphere at about 400,000 feet, traveling at about 60 kilometres per second, this is the incredible light show that it creates.”

Atwood said the meteor was probably no bigger than the size of a grapefruit and may have broken into several smaller pieces before making contact with the earth or burning up before hitting land.

The source of the meteor can only be determined once the meteorites are examined, said Chris Heard, a curator of a collection of meteorites at the Edmonton university.
