Wal-Mart Stores Inc. purchases wind power for Texas stores

Abilene, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Everything is bigger in Texas and now, the biggest discount retailer in the country will go green by adding wind power to their Lone Star state stores.

According to the Dallas Business Journal, Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recently purchased wind energy to power approximately 360 stores and other facilities across Texas.

The retail giant acquired the renewable energy from a Duke Energy wind farm. Currently under construction, the Duke Energy wind farm is slated to begin electricity production for the retailer in April 2009.

The report states, “According to information from Wal-Mart, the project will provide about 226 million kilowatt-hours of renewable power each year. That is enough electricity to power 20,000 average homes in America.

“By using the renewable energy, Wal-Mart will avoid producing more than 139,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.”

In addition to Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina-based Duke Energy provides wind powered energy to about 4 million customers nationwide.
