Former first lady Barbara Bush will go under the knife for a procedure to fix an perforated ulcer

Austin, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — While First Lady Laura Bush shops around for a book deal, her mother-in-law Barbara Bush is preparing to spend a few days in a hospital in Houston, Texas following a procedure for a perforated ulcer, a statement by the hospital said on Wednesday.

Bush, 83, was taken to The Methodist Hospital on Tuesday night after suffering from abdominal pains and doctors conducted a battery of tests on her.

“As a result, she underwent routine, laparoscopic surgery Tuesday night to correct a perforated ulcer,” hospital spokeswoman Ami Felker told AFP. She added that Bush’s surgeons sealed off a “one-centimeter hole” in her stomach.

“She was resting comfortably Wednesday morning, and visiting with her family,” Felker added.

Mrs. Bush is scheduled to be discharged next week after the Thanksgiving holiday.

President Bush said Wednesday, “I’m thankful for the fact that my mother is doing well.”
