British foreign secretary meets Zardari, Gilani

Islamabad (APP): In his second visit to Pakistan, the British foreign secretary, David Miliband held day long meetings with the Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistani president and the Prime Minister of Pakistan.  Yusuf Raza Gilani and discussed Pakistan’s strategy on the fight against terrorism. He conveyed the feeling of the British government about the new democratic setup in Pakistan and said that Pakistan has gained significant importance in the region in the fields of security and economy.

The Pakistani President, besides acknowledging the British support in the Pakistani strategy of combating terrorism expressed hopes that Britain will play a major role in providing access to Pakistani goods to the European markets. The President of Pakistan also appreciated the leading role played by Britain at the Friends of Pakistan forum where the group had pledged its support in the development of Pakistan’s energy sector, institution building and in bringing the stability in the country and the border areas of Pakistan.

While discussing various political, economic and securities issue with the visiting British foreign secretary, the President expressed his concern over the US drone attacks in the tribal areas of Pakistan and the physical and psychological pressures such attacks are creating on Pakistan. He said “the issue of terrorism was being dealt with on the political, economic and military fronts simultaneously and was aimed at bringing peace and stability to the region. The effective strategy adopted by the government had full political and public ownership.”
