Michael Vick plead guilty on Tuesday to state dogfighting charges and animal cruelty charges

Little Rock, Arkansas (CaymanMama.com) — Life is not as sweet as it used to be for former NFL superstar Michael Vick, 28, as he plead guilty on Tuesday to state dogfighting charges and animal cruelty charges.

Vick’s plea of guilty was done in a effort to make the former quarterback eligible for early release from his prison sentence and possibly speed up his return to the field.

The former Atlanta Falcons star pleaded guilty to one charge and not guilty to a second count that was then dropped. He was served with  a three-year suspended sentence.

“I want to apologize to the court, my family, and to all the kids who looked up to me as a role model,” Vick told the judge.

Currently, the animal abuser is serving a 23-month sentence in Kansas for his federal dogfighting conviction, and is expected to be released on July 20, 2009 to begin serving three years probation. Each state felony count is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Under federal law, prisoners are not allowed to be released to a halfway house if they are still involved in pending charges.

Vick’s good life quickly spiraled downward following the federal charges filed against him in August 2007 for bankrolling a dogfighting operation from his home in eastern Virginia in Surry County, just south of Richmond.

Vick admitted to being instrumental in the inhumane killing of dogs that underperformed.

He has since filed for bankruptcy after he lost almost all of his staggering $130 million he got when he signed a deal with the Atlanta Falcons in December 2004.

“Any time in prison is hell. Michael’s been punished. He knows what he did was wrong,” Vick’s lawyer Billy Martin said.
