Diagnosing chest pain using an angiogram test

People opt for CT scans for reason (a) that they are not aware of the ineffectiveness of the test and (2) CT scan of heart is non invasive, the fear of laying down in the CathLabs make people go for CT scans and (3) the cost. But most chest pain patients need to go through the angiography test anyway to find out the extent of blockage in the blood vessels.
Dr. Rita Redburg of University of California at San Francisco said, “I think its being used without clear data of any benefit for the patients.”
Cardiac Catheterization or angiography test is the best and most exact way of diagnosing the cause of chest pains during which the doctors peek inside by inserting a dye that shows blocked arteries on an Xray and the research has proved it as doctors at Johns Hopkins University Schools sample tested 291 heart patients by putting them through both the test just to find out that SC scan was less accurate.
The studies show that the 30 percent of the angiograms do not show no blockages, Dr. Kim Allan Williams, the professor of medicine and radiology at the University of Chicago said, “We’d like to fix it so we have no more normal angiograms.”
The patient of heart diseases must also prepare themselves and request for the reason of CT scan or angiography if their doctors prescribe such tests without stress tests.
The fact is that radiology exposes the patients to more radiation and as such also expands the risk of increasing cancer in the US and increasing number of CT scans contribute to additional cancers.
